Perry County Cancer Alliance Prepares for Annual Awareness Vigil

NEW LEXINGTON, OH – An event to highlight those battling cancer and to remember those who have lost their battle will be happening tomorrow night in Perry County.
The Perry County Cancer Alliance will be hosting their Annual Cancer Awareness Vigil beginning at 6PM in front of the New Lexington Fire Department and Administration Building.
Karen Newlon, the Support Coordinator, says the evening will be filled with entertainment, awards, and to cap off the evening will be a candle light vigil for those who are going through the tough battle that is a cancer diagnosis.
“We think it’s very important, we’ve hosted it for years. Mrs. DeWine started it years ago, it started out as a breast cancer awareness but in Perry County we’re recognizing all cancers.” Newlon said. “So we have been together since 1999 and we have given away $2.3 Million to people in Perry County who have experienced cancer and with that said that’s a lot of cancer and a lot of survivors, a lot of people we’ve lost along that journey.”
The entertainment is being provided by Brandy & Tommy Hettick, there will also be some poems read, and special recognitions being handed out.
Newlon says there will also be a family in attendance sharing their story of going on this cancer journey together with the Cancer Alliance.
“We hope they remember that we care, we are just a group of 7 volunteers and we do care.” Newlon said. “There are a lot of people in the community that care, the people who donate to our activities, the people who support them.”
