Perry County Jr. 4-H Camp Offers Summer Fun, Growth for Local Youth

PERRY COUNTY, OH – The Perry County OSU Extension Office is getting ready to release the details about their upcoming Jr. 4 H Camp.
The Perry County Jr. 4 H Camp will be held from June 22nd through the 25th at 4 H Camp Ohio in Licking County.
Jessica Rockey, an Educator in 4 H Youth Development with the Extension Office, says here in the coming weeks their current 4 H families, with children ages 8 to 13, will begin to see invitations and registration links to camp in their email inbox.
She says this is a great experience for both the older and younger 4 H kids but in slightly different ways.
“The unique thing about 4 H camps in Ohio is that all of our camp counselors are current 4 H teens.” Rockey said. “So those teens have gone on through, essentially, a hiring process, like teens would for any first job. Here in Perry County, we do that through the fall, and then by the start of the year they start training, planning, getting all their ducks in a row to put on an awesome camp for all of our 4 H members or non 4 H members, because there are some opportunities there as well.”
Rockey says for the younger kids, they’ll gain experience working with other campers in their cabin, planning what they’ll do each day, as well as making life long memories.
“I think for so many kids, this tends to be the first experience with independent living, you know they might spend a night at grandma’s or at their best friend’s house.” Rockey explained, “But to be away from home and have that experience of living in a cabin with their peers and having to help clean up, help plan events, go participate in things that they choose and have some say over. Lots of opportunities for independent growth and development and of course, just lots of fun too, being out in nature, getting to play games.”
