Zanesville, Ohio- June 21st is the summer solstice, which means it is the longest day of the year.

In celebration of that Primrose Retirement Communities partnered with the National Alzheimer’s Association to use the day as a way to remember those who suffer from Alzheimer’s. The “poppy flowers” are planted to honor and bring awareness to different effects of the disease.

“It’s a disease that is different for every single person,” said Zanesville’s Primrose  Executive Director Shala Steinman. “There’s no book to tell you what you’re going to experience or what you’re going to do. It is just a learn as you go.”

Steinman said there are more than five million Americans who are living with Alzheimer’s. She said it’s seen here as she has multiple connections to the disease.

“I personally had a grandmother with the disease and my parents took care of her for several years, said Steinman. “Then as I work in the retirement community, for 9 years, I have several residents that are effected and their loved ones.”

Primrose staff bought shirts as a fundraiser and wore them along with Primrose residents who lost someone who had the disease.
