Red Cross offers tips to prepare for possible storm

ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Red Cross is also preparing for the possible storm by educating the public on emergency readiness.

The Red Cross said there are a few things people should keep in mind while preparing for the storm – or any weather emergency for that matter. Marlene Henderson, the Executive Director at the Red Cross, said being ready ahead of time is key.

“The easiest thing to do is to be prepared. You know, build a kit, make a plan, and stay very much informed. Listen to the news, get a battery operated radio and that way that’s going to run no matter what in case there’s a power outage. Use common sense. Stay in during the storm. If you lose power plan on sheltering in place for a little while.”

Henderson also stressed the importance of staying indoors unless you absolutely have to leave. She said you should put together your preparedness kit beforehand.

“Everyone should have water, flashlights, those kind of things. Canned food, a can opener that will open the canned foods. Snack items. That you could actually stay in and sustain a little while. You know, while the power’s out. But the best thing: stay off the roads. Stay in during the snow, ice, whatever weather emergency is that’s coming up.”

Henderson said if the power does, in fact, go out for a long period of time emergency warming stations will be opened up for the public to use.
