Red Cross training Volunteers

NORWICH, Ohio – The Ohio Buckeye Region of Red Cross is holding various orientations and training sessions to prepare volunteers for Hurricane recovery efforts.
American Red Cross’s Southeast Ohio Chapter held a disaster relief volunteer training day from 8:30 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. on September 9, 2017. Disaster Program Manager Tim Callahan explained today‘s volunteers were given insight to the poverty in Texas.
“So we’re also looking at you know what that process looks like for them,” Callahan said. “We’re trying to give them as much knowledge before they leave, so they are prepared. You know so they’re learning a lot of different things about sheltering things they’ve never thought about before.”
The training sessions offered are for those wanting to volunteer for Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and possibly Hurricane José. However, that’s not the only purpose local volunteers showed up for the training session.
“They are also wanting to stay here and help locally,” Callahan said. “This gives a lot of attention too, this can happen at home. So they want to be trained and qualified to either go south or stay here locally after everything is done or be able to deploy next year whenever something like this happens again.”
American Red Cross will continue to hold Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma orientations every Thursday at 6:00 in the evening and training sessions every Saturday from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. with food provided.
According to Red Cross’s Hurricane Harvey Fast Facts published on September 4, 2017. More than 3,000 Red Cross disaster workers are on the ground, with another 450 being sent. As of Sunday September 3, 2017 at least 33,000 people sought refuge in 284 Red Cross and partnering shelters across Texas. Louisiana emergency shelters hosted about 1,300 people who same night.
