Are there risks of being a “marijuana mom”
ZANESVILLE, Ohio- “Marijuana moms” say smoking pot allows them to be better parents.
Moms who smoke marijuana are claiming that they can take care of their children while enjoying pot. They are comparing it to having a glass of wine. C.E.O. of Muskingum Behavioral Health, Steve Carrel, said he doesn’t believe the two are comparable.
“If you have a glass of wine, I can tell you how much alcohol there is in there, said Carrel. “I can tell you what your blood alcohol level is going to be, relatively speaking. I can’t tell you that with marijuana. That’s probably the part that scares me the most.”
Medical marijuana is slated to become available in Ohio in 2018. Carrel said, although there is some evidence to prove that marijuana has medicinal value, it is still being researched and studied.
” ‘One of the moms says I”m a better mom. I’m more focused and attentive while I’m medicated.’ I have a problem with the word medicated,” said Carrel. “Medication has been studied by the FDA. Also, medication is dosed. If I take an 80-milligram aspirin, I’m getting 80 milligrams. If I smoke a joint, how much of the chemicals am I getting? I have no idea. No two joints have the same amount of THC levels.”
Carrel said, another worry of his, unless you live in a fully legal marijuana state, you’re buying off the street. He said this means you might not have any idea where it came from or what was added to the drug.
