ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The snow, ice, and temperature swings this winter will leave behind some major potholes in the road.

Zanesville Mayor Don Mason says the city has two crews working throughout the city to ensure that those potholes are filled before they can do damage to your vehicle. Mason says a key aspect of the city’s efforts is the implementation of a newer type of patchwork.

“One of the things we’ve gone away from is the use of cold patch and that’s where you really put in a material that has not been preheated, goes in the hole, doesn’t really have that adhesive capability,” Mason said. “So, the last six years we moved towards using what’s called hot boxes, where we heat up asphalt to over 100 degrees and then we clean out the hole, put the patch, hot patch in the hole and try to compact it. ”

Mason says an important aspect to ensure that roads stay smooth is to let the city know whenever they notice a pot hole on road. According to Mason, the sooner the city knows about a pot hole the better.

“We need to get on top of potholes early because you want to get them when they’re small because any pothole, if left unattended to ends up getting bigger. A lot of times it gets deeper and we don’t want motorists to have any, you know, mechanical issues because of the potholes. So that’s why we do appreciate being told of potholes when they occur. Because that way, we can get to them right away,” Mason said. “I would just say this. People should not assume that the city knows of all the potholes that are developing. Let us know. ”

You can report potholes on the city of Zanesville’s website and by clicking on the “Report a Concern” tab at the bottom of the page.
