Robert “Bob” G. Johnson, 96, Zanesville, Ohio passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at his daughter’s home.
He was born November 8, 1928, to Herbert and Blanche Betts Johnson in Quaker City, Ohio. He graduated from Quaker City High School. Upon graduation, Bob attended and graduated from the U.S. Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, IL on November 16, 1948. He proudly and honorably served his country as a Seaman First Class for the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Portsmouth stationed in Philadelphia, PA. He felt honored to be selected to play first base for the Navy baseball team.
He married Mary Zayac Johnson on December 23, 1948, who preceded him in death on July 23, 2002. Together they raised five children who he enjoyed spending time with along with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had many lifelong friends. Bob was an avid coffee drinker and could be found most mornings enjoying a cup with his very loyal group of friends.
He was a 50 year plus member of Grace United Methodist Church, a 50 year plus member of the Masons and was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion and the Eagles.
Bob retired from the Ohio Power Company and the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
He is survived by his five children, Paula Jasper, Patty (Doug) Reynolds, Kay Thompson (Chuck) Dow, Barb (Michael) Funk, and Bob (Cheryl) Johnson; grandchildren, Jared (Crystal) Reynolds, David Reynolds, Max (Alisha) Funk, Alex (Alicia Bell) Funk, Jamey (Emily) Buckner and Cole (Carly) Johnson; great grandchildren, Hannah Reynolds, Kloe Reynolds, Gabby Oliver, Alex (David Yantes) Oliver, Brinley, Elle and Avery Buckner and Bennett Johnson; great-great grandchildren, Emersyn and Ellison Yantes; a sister-in-law Eloise Zayac; many nieces and nephews; and friends, Roma Patterson and Heather Rogers and her family.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Denny Jasper on September 23, 2012; a great grandson, Bean Johnson on January 13, 2024; and many friends.
The family would like to thank the Veterans Services for their help in so many ways.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home where funeral service will be held at 12:00 P.M. with Tom Barton officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at 2:00 P.M. at Friends Cemetery, 24001 Leatherwood Road (Ohio State Route 25) Quaker City, Ohio 43773.
