Rotary 5k Hunger Run
ZANESVILLE, Ohio- Rotary members are gearing up for their first 5k run this summer that will help feed local children.
Last year Rotary partnered with Zane Grey Elementary School to make sure all students had food to eat and this year they’re hosting a Rotary Hunger 5k race. The race is to help raise money to make sure more students won’t go hungry this year.
“During the year the children go home and they may or may not have food but when they come to school the school provides a hot lunch for them. So on holiday weekends such as maybe Easter they’re going to be off for a number of days,” said Everett Jackson the Race Director. “So Rotary is providing funds through the sponsorships of the 5k and their participants to provide food to send home with the school kids during the long weekends.”
Jackson says they are aiming for 70 participants, but are planning for 200 people. Registration is $30 per participant and that includes race memorabilia.
“Each participant will get a shirt they will also receive a goody bag with things in it. And during the day of the race we’ll have lots of water there,” said Jackson. “We’ll have snacks and things and bananas that are being donated by many of the merchants in the area. Those who finish the 5k – it’s either a walk or a run, they don’t have to run the whole thing, a walk or a run – will receive this nice medal.”
The race will take place on June 3rd at OUZ-Zane State College. Kick-off will be at 8:30 a.m. sharp. All racers are encouraged to arrive at 7:30 a.m. Anyone interested in participating can sign-up at www.runsignup.com. .
