COLUMBUS, OH- February is National Unclaimed Funds Month and the Ohio Department of Commerce is urging Ohioans to check to see if they might have some missing money.

Susie Wagner, the Outreach Supervisor with the Department of Commerce’s Division of Unclaimed Funds, says these funds can come from a variety of sources like a dormant bank account, uncashed checks, as well as stocks and bonds.

She says whether the money is in your name, a loved one’s, or a business it only takes a few minutes to check for your unclaimed funds.

“In the last 6 months we paid out over 100,000 claims, which is four times more than we did the previous year and that’s because of our new system.” Wagner said. “As a part of the new system, claimants can search their name, claim their money, upload their documents, and check on the status of their claim, all on our site.”

Wagner says the process to search for funds is simple, quick, and free.

She says all you have to do is head to unclaimedfunds.ohio.gov and search for your name to get your claim form, double check all of your documents, finally, send off your information to the Division of Unclaimed Funds.

“We have gotten feedback that the new system is so much easier for claimants to use.” Wagner explained. “To find their name and find their money, and some of them are even getting their checks in as little as a couple of weeks.”

If you think you or a loved one might have some missing money, you can head to the Division of Unclaimed Funds Website.
