Cross

Sharon Brelsford Mastous, 84, of Somerset, Ohio, passed away peacefully at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio, on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024, at 17:12 PM; EST. Sharon was born December 28th, 1939, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of the late James and Marjory Breslford.

She spent most of her life in the field of equestrianism, a true “horse person,” a consummate and remembered teacher and mentor of young and old alike. She taught equestrian disciplines, including Classical Dressage, Western Pleasure, Show Jumping, Barrel Racing, Driving, Trail Riding, and Parade Riding, and many others. She taught folks how to load, unload, and trailer horses in every condition, including frightened, spooked horses. She specialized in breaking and taming particularly difficult to control horses. She helped birth and raise dozens of foals and helped horse owners find and purchase the “right” horse. She owned and operated a horse ranch, which boarded, cared for, and fed, up to 32 horses, where she also gave various horse-related lessons. She worked as a Riding Instructor for Adventist academy in Newbury Park, California for many years, teaching hundreds of children and adults how to ride and care for horses. She worked with the California State Parks Assistance Unit at Point Magu State Park. She was instrumental in the founding of the Volunteer Mounted Patrol, a mounted search and rescue team that operated in all over California, rescuing panicked horses from threatening wildfires. She helped organize and spearhead hundreds of trail rides across various Southern California mountain trails.

She also worked as a hairdresser for a beauty salon in Westlake, California, Kim’s Hairdressing. After she moved to Ohio, she participated for many years with the Perry County Horse Council, and rode rescue for the Central Ohio Mounted Search Unit. She also worked for Sears, in Lancaster, Ohio, until it closed. A consummate horse-person, she endeared herself to hundreds of animal-lovers throughout her life in the world of equestrianism. She also trained, bred, and raised dogs, including and especially miniature Austrian Shepherds and Collies.
In her later years she lived at the Somerset Senior Village, and attended the New Life Apostolic Church in Glenford, Ohio, where she was saved and took Christ our lord into her heart and soul. She enjoyed macrame, coloring, interior design, playing cards, choir singing, everything Star Trek, among many other hobbies.

She is survived by her children: James Brelsford Mastous, Daniel Scott Mastous, his wife, Julie Mastous and son, Anton Mastous; and her sister-in-law, Sheila Brelsford.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Scott Mastous, and her brother, Thomas Brelsford.
