Sheriff’s Office Receives Generous Donation

With the help of the Zanesville Jaycees, Muskingum County Sheriff’s deputies can now more easily catch speeders.

The Jaycees recently donated $1,000 to the sheriff’s office, and now officers are now using a new tool to crack down on fast drivers. Sheriff Matt Lutz said with their donation, the sheriff’s office was able to purchase a new radar unit to use in their cruisers.

“We don’t have one of the radar units in every cruiser, so we kind of rotate those, and we have the lasers that we can transport in and out of the cars pretty easily, but the radars once you get them in a car it’s hard to take them back out, so that was an item that we could use, and we use them for a lot of different things,” Lutz said.

Lutz said the sheriff’s office has recently seen an uptick in complaints due to speeding. He said the new device is just another tool deputies can use to keep our community safe, and hopefully reduce the amount of traffic accidents in the area.

“We use the radars to basically try to slow down and control the traffic, we’ve learned over the course of time, that if we can control the speed it will help eliminate a lot of the accidents, and obviously it’s our job to try to make our county as safe as possible,” Lutz said.

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of motor-vehicle crashes in the United States.
