Sheriff’s Office reminds residents fireworks are illegal

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Even though illegal in the state of Ohio, thousands will still light off fireworks over the weekend to celebrate America’s independence.
Sgt. Matt McCauley with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office said that deputies will be out in force over the holiday weekend to patrol the streets and make sure everyone is using fireworks safely. Sgt. McCauley said that while it’s still illegal to set off fireworks in Ohio, he knows some will still do it.
“We’re obviously going to have extra patrols this weekend and something we do is we are in designated areas when the fireworks are heard or seen,” said Sgt. McCauley. “The officer will encounter it. We also get bombarded with phone calls over the weekend asking us to go and check on noise complaints and if that happens we’ll try to go and address the issue.”
He said it’s rare, but those who light off fireworks could be subjugated to up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Sgt. McCauley just asks those who do use fireworks, do so responsibly.
“Never let kids play with fireworks or set them off. Always have a parent with them. Be aware of your surrounds and the environment,” said Sgt. McCauley.
Sgt. McCauley said that they Sheriff’s Office tries to do its best to investigate every firework complaint they receive.
