Possible Gas Leak in Zanesville

(UPDATE-2:30 PM) The Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency and the Zanesville Fire Department are helping investigate a possible natural gas leak in the downtown Zanesville area, south of I-70. Executive Director Bo Keck says they have called Columbia Gas and Energy Co-op with hopes of finding where the smell of gas is coming from. There have not been any ordered evacuation but some organizations have decided to clear their buildings like Muskingum County Job and Family Services on Woodlawn Avenue and The United Way on Putnam Avenue. Zanesville Mayor Jeff Tilton says the fire department is assisting in the investigation into the issue. E-M-A Public Information Office Jennifer Heistand is asking the public not to call 9-1-1 to report the smell of gas since it’s already under investigation. The E-M-A says if you are in the vicinity, immediately extinguish any burners or other flames and be prepared to evacuate. Officials recommend sheltering in place by closing doors and windows. The Communications Manager of Columbia Gas of Ohio, Dave Rau, says crews have not found any leaks in their lines and at this time do not know what is causing the odor. Rau says they will continue to respond to customer complaints about the issue. The Energy Co-op gas lines have also been checked and cleared. Tests are now expected from the Ohio EPA and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
