Soup Spice Grab-and-Go Kits available at Perry County Libraries

NEW LEXINGTON, Ohio – January is National Soup Month and the Perry County Library is running a special program for the occasion.
Soup Spice kits are available at all Perry County Library branches, including the bookmobile. Each week this month features a soup that is a staple in different parts of the country.
“Our first week of soups that we have that started last week was meatball minestrone. This one is actually from the New York region. This week, the current one that we have right now, is three sisters soup, and that one is from Arizona,” said librarian Sarah Few. “Next week, starting on Tuesday, we will have French onion soup and that one is from Tennessee. And then, our last week in January, we will have Potato Bacon Soup, which is from Idaho.”

Informational pamphlets on display at the Perry County Library. The pamphlets include recipes and background information on the soups history and cultural context.
The kits come with spice packets and a pamphlet with the recipe and information about the soup’s history and regional cuisine. According to Few, the program was inspired by the spice kit program that was part of their summer reading program. Few says the return of the program has been a success for the library.
“It’s been very well received. I believe our first week, out of the hundred kits that we had, about 85 of them were picked up in that first week. So, people are very excited. They absolutely loved when we did it over the summer, so we’re really excited to bring this back,” Few said.
The spice packets are first-come, first-served, with limited quantity, but the pamphlets will always be on hand. Three Sisters Soup will be available until Tuesday, when the soup of the week will be French Onion Soup.
