NORWICH, Ohio- The American Red Cross is helping to save thousands of lives after Southeastern Texas has been experiencing an unprecedented amount of flooding due to Hurricane Harvey.

The Southeast Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross has deployed five people already to Texas to help aid the area. Executive Director of the American Red Cross for Southeastern Ohio, Marlene Henderson, said the areas Red Cross will be sending more people down to Huston and the surrounding areas. These areas will be needing help for a “long time.”

“Some of our volunteers have gone down in our Emergency Response Vehicles,” said Henderson. “They will actually be going out on the streets at some point helping people. We have shelter workers going in. We have several shelters set up in and around the Houston area. Saturday and Sunday night we had a lot of residents in all of them.”

Henderson said the best way to help out the people in the Houston area is by making a monetary donation to the American Red Cross. A monetary donation helps the Red Cross allocate money to where it is most needed. She said there are several easy ways to donate.

“It is as easy as texting Red Cross at 90999 on your phone, and that’s a $10 donation,” said Henderson. “You can go to Redcross.org and make a donation that way. You can send a check to our local office and in the memo line put disaster relief 2017.”

Henderson warns that the American Red Cross never calls asking for monetary donations. If you receive a call asking for money to help the hurricane victims, it is not the American Red Cross.
