Spots Open for “Our Meals, Your Wheels” Program
The "Our Meals, Your Wheels" program has openings for more people.
Wednesday was the first official day for sign-ups for the program. But organizers say attendance is surprisingly low.
"This is just the first day, but we have only had about 100 people sign up, 60 of those are normal clients or seniors, we have only had about 40 from within the county to sign up and we are hoping for at least 400," says Earl Stapleton with the Sunrise Senior Center.
The program allows Muskingum County residents, 60 and older, to pick up five free meals on May 14th. To sign up, seniors need to bring proof of age and residency and fill out a short assessment. Then seniors will have to come to the Sunrise Senior Center on May 14th to pick up the meals in person. Stapleton says seniors who are going hungry is a serious problem.
"I personally think it is a lot bigger than people realize in the county. There is a need here just as well as there is in other parts of the country and other countries. We have a need here in Muskingum County that is just as strong in other areas that a lot of people fail to recognize I believe," says Stapleton.
Sign-ups for the "Our Meals, Your Wheels" program will continue Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. til 3 p.m. at the Sunrise Senior Center.
