Spring Forward And Check Your Smoke Detectors
This coming weekend is when you change your clocks.
Daylight saving time starts Sunday and while you turn your clocks forward one hour, the Zanesville Fire Department wants to remind you to also change your smoke detector batteries.
“Yeah, we’d just like to use the time change to remind people to change the batteries in your smoke detector. It comes twice a year, fall back and spring forward, change them, wipe them off, test them just make sure they work,” said Zanesville Fire Department Firefighter, Chad Brock.
Aside from changing your batteries, it’s also important to wipe away any excess dust from your detector and test it to ensure it works properly. Also, while you’re changing batteries, be sure to take a closer look at your carbon monoxide detectors.
“We like to encourage people to have those as well. With the gas appliances whether it be ranges, furnaces, it helps to have those because it is something you don’t see. It’s a gas that you’re not able to see or smell, so it’s the silent killer,” said Brock.
Smoke detectors are available for free through most local fire departments. If you’re unable to install the device or to replace the batteries on your own the Zanesville Fire Department will gladly come out and do it for you.
