Straight Up Outta’ The Underground
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – One of the values of literacy is having a better understanding of history through the ability to witness it from different perspectives.
Muskingum County Library System Director of Marketing and Community Relations Sean Fennell announced an upcoming event that emphasizes a vital component of Black History.
“We have our final Black History program coming up this Friday, February 28th at 5:15,” Fennell said. “We’re excited to offer one of our larger programs at this time. Harriet Tubman’s ‘Straight Up Outta’ the Underground,’ presented by the Cincinnati Children’s Theater on Tour. We have had this troupe come through before and present lots of wonderful shows to us and this should be a wonderful show. Just like others, we get a lot of really great feedback from providing these live theater shows for folks.”
The show is geared for kids 8 and up and will spotlight Harriet Tubman’s influential role in the Underground Railroad, which led Black people out of bondage during the mid 1800s. The 45 minute presentation will also include a question and answer session.
“This is a wonderful way for your young ones to engage with local history,” Fennell said. “Especially with the high quality, professional organization like the Cincinnati Children’s Theater. So they’ve come in before, we’ve had a wonderful success with them. You may have already attended a Cincinnati Children’s Theater program, if you haven’t then this is a wonderful opportunity to do so. But this should just be a really wonderful opportunity to bring the whole family together to engage with some history. Learn a little bit about the Underground Railroad in a very engaging and age appropriate way.”
Registration is required for the event that will take place at 5:15, this Friday, in Elson Hall on the Ohio University Zanesville Campus located at 1425 Newark Road. you can register at MuskingumLibrary.org.
