Stress Free Tax Filing
Many people may find doing their taxes intimidating, but state experts said that it doesn’t have to be that way.
With the April 15 tax filing deadline less than a month away, Department of Commerce representatives share some helpful tips and reminders to help ensure a smooth process for Ohioans.
“Being as organized as possible is hugely important,” explained Deputy Superintendent Division of Financial Institution Rob Rutkowski, “Keeping track of all your W2s not just wage income, but from your interest income or any other source of income.”
Besides W2s those filing taxes should also have their 1099s, tax documents like deductible expenses and interest and financial statements. Taxpayers are also encouraged to take advantage of available resources like online tools and “My Social Security Account” to manage documents securely.
“If you’re just filing based on your W2 that’s much simpler then if you are going to try and deduct for business expenses,” said Rutkowski. “But, approach it incrementally. Break it down into small parts. Everyone has to do this. We’re all in the same boat. Just find your entry point and how much help you need, whether that’s the full on accountant, or software or just a friend that can help you do the taxes. 1:23
The division encourages Ohioans to keep taxes at the top of mind year-round to reduce stress and improve financial planning. Suggestions include updating withholdings after major life events, contributing to retirement accounts for potential tax benefits and staying up to date on changes to tax laws.
