Students + Games = Success!
Westview Elementary teachers believe students plus games equals mathematical success.
Students and parents filled the gymnasium for the school’s first Family Math Night. The 4th and 5th graders manned the tables as the kindergarten through 3rd graders and their parents walked around to learn the different games.
"We never expected this many parents and families to come, but tonight we are expecting 300 parents and children and we have had more people come in the door than made reservations. So we got a response we truly never expected and we are really, really happy," says Trudy Cultice a 2nd grade teacher.
Cultice says the games are designed to help students meet some of the required state indicators. Also, it is a great way for parents to get involved with their child’s learning outside the classroom.
"Every family that walks in the door will get a goody bag and in that good bag will be the tools they need, dominos, dice, cards and all the rules for every game they play as they are here tonight," tells Cultice.
The food and materials used were paid for by the Parents and Teachers Organization and through donations from Walmart and Sam’s Club. While this is the first year Westview Elementary has held a family math night, teachers say they hope to do it again next year.
