Students Gear Up For College

Area high school students are taking the next step in their education.

On Thursday Zane State College and Ohio University Zanesville hosted College Night 2012.  Director of College Access Programs Heather Sands said the students can pick and choose from 14 workshops to attend.

"What will happen is the students will travel from workshop to workshop and have a chance to ask different questions," said Sands.  "We have everything from a financial aid professional talking about scholarships and financial aid in the community to a student and parent panel where they talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of going on to college."

$4,500 in scholarships were raffled off to give students a jumpstart on college expenses.  Sands said students are planning early to get ahead.

"I know that there’s a student here today that I talked to a few days ago that’s a freshman at Maysville, and they really just want to be able to get an early start," said Sands.  "This student actually contacted us, and they’re very interested in getting ready for college as a sophomore.  They want to know what’s out there, to see the opportunities and just be prepared."

More than 500 people pre-registered, and Sands said she anticipated a record-breaking crowd this year.
