Sweet Corn in Stock

After a rough season – Sweet Corn is finally hitting the store shelves and isn’t producing spike in cost that was predicted.

Farmer Bill Huston spent his morning in the fields – hand picking and delivering more than 600-Dozen sweet corn. For Huston and other Ohio Farmer’s this season has been a rough one. Heavy rains delayed planting and put the harvest about a month behind schedule.

"Finally, Finally we got corn," expressed Huston. "We’re about a month late, generally we have corn by the 4th of July and tomatoes by the 4th of July."

But the much anticipated corn is not necessarily the relief Ohio Farmers need. Financially – Huston said the corn will be tough to market. The late harvest shortened the window for sales – steepening the competition.

"It pushes everybody together, some people get it out earlier than others in most years but this year about everybody planted the same time so there’s more supply on the market right now," explained Huston.

This high supply will be a relief for the consumer. Huston said the cost of corn was predicted to spike- along with the price of gas, fertilizer, seed, and chemicals- but thanks to the competition you won’t see the hike.
