Teens Hunt with Ohio Governor

Ten teens from across Ohio take to the woods as part of Third Annual Youth Turkey Hunt.

The hunt at Dillon State Park began in the early hours of the morning and at the end of the day three teens bagged big birds.

"We saw the hen out in the middle of the field and then we saw him way behind her," said 15-year-old hunter Michael Stark. "He wouldn’t move at all so we had to sneak up behind him."

Sam Garrigus also got a bird, "The weather wasn’t playing right today and we didn’t think we would see anything and it ended up we got one and it was good weather after that."

The teens were chosen for the hunt through an essay writing contest. Josiah hunted with Governor Ted Strickland and though he didn’t get a bird he still had a good day.

" It was great," said Josiah. "I had a lot of fun. I didn’t expect to win, but when I found out I did I was really excited."

Strickland encourages all Ohio youth to spend more time outdoors enjoying what the state has to offer.

"I think there is something about nature that is so important for young people, so that they can experience the wonder in which we live," explained Governor Strickland. "I think we would have less problems with our young people if they were able to spend more time out of doors and in nature like I was able to when I was a young man."

The ten teens hunted with experienced local guides.
