Teens Take the Stage at Muskingum University’s Music Theatre CAMP
NEW CONCORD, OH – Muskingum University is filled with song, dance, and a lot of talent this week thanks to a special camp designed for young performers.
The university is hosting its Summer High School Music Theatre CAMP, welcoming 39 students from over 20 different schools across the region. The weeklong camp includes daily movement classes, private voice lessons, scene study, acting workshops, and even improv sessions all designed to help students grow as performers.
“We do some acting classes, we do some solo work, we basically cover everything in the musical theatre world. Dance, acting, everything.” Student Camper, Hugh Snyder said. “I think this is a great experience because they teach you so much in just a short amount of time.”
After six days of hard work, the students will take the stage for a final performance this Saturday, June 28th at 2:30 P.M. The show will take place in the Caldwell Hall on Muskingum University’s campus and features 15 scenes from Broadway favorites. Admission is free and open to the public.
“I see the progress. At the beginning, I see the students standing on the stage and wondering what’s going to happen. Then, they learn the music, and every day it gets better and better. By the time they get to the show, I’m almost overwhelmed by the learning. They get happy about it too. They’re proud of their accomplishments. Sometimes they even cry and we all cheer. We’re all great advocates for positive support.” CAMP Director, Carol Wilcox-Jones said.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Summer Music Theatre CAMP and it’s also a bittersweet goodbye. It’s the final year for longtime camp director, Carol Wilcox-Jones. But while she’s taking a final bow, the camp is planned to continue next year.
