For

current and future educators pursuing a degree, the Olaf and Olga Hanson Scholarship offers financial assistance during the student debt crisis and teacher shortage.

Elementary school teacher, Kyle Jones, and Muskingum University senior, Rachel Verhey are two of the four recipients this year who hope to give back to the community.

“My aspiration after I graduate is just to continue being a very inspirational member of the community. Whether it’s through education or as an administrator somewhere in this county but, yeah that’s my goal is to just continue inspiring the learners of now and in the future,” said Jones, a teacher from Roseville Elementary who’s pursuing a masters degree.

“My goal is to become a high school math teacher in one of the local districts here in Muskingum County and I’m not really sure beyond that point, but that is my goal,” said Verhey, who is pursuing her bachelors.

While visiting the Muskingum County Community Foundation to accept their scholarship, they learned more about its namesake Olaf Hanson.

“I wish I would have known her in person, if I’m being honest. Just hearing about her story and her presence and existence, sounds very infectious and I’m honored to be part of her legacy that living throughout in this scholarship. Yeah I wish I would have been able to meet her in person and get to know a little more about her personally now hearing her stories.”

The other two scholarship recipients are Teara Hill and Brielle Vernon.
