Trick or Treat safety reminders

ZANESVILLE, OH- Halloween is just around the corner, and with trick-or-treaters getting ready to fill Zanesville neighborhoods, police are reminding everyone to keep safety in mind this weekend.
Zanesville’s official trick or treat night is set for Sunday, October 26th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Local officers say both drivers and parents play a key role in making sure the evening stays safe.
“Drivers need to just slow down, watch for any kids that may be crossing the road, as far as the kids they need to make sure they look both ways before they cross the street, try to utilize the crosswalks as much as possible, if parents are around definitely keep ahold of your kids before they cross the street,” said Sergeant Kyle Brookover.
Police also urge parents to make sure kids’ costumes are visible by using reflective tape or glow sticks that can help them stand out in the dark. Children should only visit homes that have their porch lights on, which signals that they’re participating in trick or treat. Brookover adds it’s always smart for parents to check through the candy before kids dig in.
“Obviously if it looks like it’s homemade candy you want to be a little more leery on that, obviously factory sealed candy will be the best,” said Brookover.
