Two-vehicle fatal accident in Perry County

LANCASTER, Ohio— The Lancaster Post of the State Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle accident that claimed the life of a Glenford man.
According to the State Patrol, on Thursday, July 16, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Troopers responded to a fatal crash at the intersection of State Route 204 and State Route668, in Hopewell Township, Perry County.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2013 Ford F-150, driven by Thomas Shafer, 83, Glenford, was traveling northeast on State Route 204. A 2019 Ford E-350, driven by Brandon Salyers, 30, Gahanna, was traveling south on State Route 668. Authorities said Salyers failed to yield the right-of-way as he attempted to proceed through the intersection and was struck by Shafer. After the collision, Salyers’ vehicle continued off the left side of the roadway, striking a culvert, a ditch, and a building. Shafer’s vehicle continued after the collision, traveling off the right side of the roadway and striking a traffic sign.
Authorities said Shafer was pronounced deceased at the scene. Salyers was transported to Grant Medical Center with serious injuries. A juvenile, who was a front seat passenger in Shafer’s F-150 at the time of the crash, was transported to Nationwide Children’s Hospital with minor injuries.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, Hopewell Township Fire Department, Thorn Township Fire Department, Somerset-Reading Township Fire Department, AirEvac, Perry County Coroner’s Office, and Midwest Towing.
