UPDATE: Two Transported in Accident on U-S Route 22

UPDATE: 9:31 p.m.

One man remains in the hospital Monday evening after a two vehicle accident on U-S route 22 near Thompson Run Rd.

It happend just after 5 p.m. when 22 year old Troy Riffle of Mount Perry was driving a red Ford Ranger west on US Route 22. He then slid left of center due to icy road conditions striking 46 year old Richard Casto of Malta who was driving a maroon Dodge Ram east on US 22.

Both men were transported to Genesis Hospital. There were no others in the vehicles at the time. Casto was later released with minor injuries. Riffle is being kept overnight and his condition is unknown at this time. Riffle will be cited for going left of center. Both lanes of US 22 were closed for almost an hour while crews worked to clear the scene. The State Highway Patrol was assisted by the South Zanesville Fire Department, and Newton Twp. EMS.

State Highway Patrolman Dean Morris said around 5 p.m. a red Ford Ranger was headed west on US 22 when it spun out hitting a maroon Dodge Ram headed east bound on US 22. The accident resulted in heavy front end damage to both vehicles and both drivers were transported.

The extent of their injuries are unknown at this time and it’s also unknown if any other occupants were in the trucks at the time. Both lanes of US 22 were closed for almost an hour while crews worked to clear the scene. The State Highway Patrol believes slick roads could have been a factor in the accident. The Patrol was assisted by the South Zanesville Fire Department and Newton Twp. EMS. The accident remains under investigation.
