Vital Tips to Stay Cool and Safe During Summer Heat
ZANESVILLE, OH – With the heat and humidity hitting our area, there are things to keep in mind if you want to stay cool.
The Muskingum County Family YMCA’s Wellness Director, Sarah Savage, shared some tips and tricks to beating the summer heat.
She said little ones are the most susceptible to heat related illnesses. Savage said if you’re an adult watching a child to push fluids, especially ones with electrolytes, to keep them hydrated.
She also recommends working out in the earlier parts of the day.
“Try to go out early in the morning where it’s not the high peak of temperature,” Savage said. “If you’re going to go out on long durations, keep yourself hydrated during your workout, every 15 minutes start to drink water. Drink water before, during and after.”
Savage says if you or someone around you starts to experience the symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, to act immediately.
“Do not, not see the signs. Don’t ignore those, if you’re feeling dizzy, nauseated, muscle cramps are a sign of it as well,” Savage said. “Don’t ignore them, try to cool yourself down, if that doesn’t work and you keep feeling nauseated and even more dizzy like you’re going to pass out, get medical help.”
Savage said if you can come indoors to work out, then do.
