Volunteers needed for Hurricane Recovery

Redcross

NORWICH, Ohio – The Ohio Buckeye Region of Red Cross along with other Regions have been sending volunteers to help with Hurricane Harvey and now with Hurricane Irma about to strike they’re looking to train more volunteers.

Red Cross’s Southeast Ohio Chapter will hold a disaster relief volunteer orientation every Thursday at 6:00 P.M. Disaster Program Manager Tim Callahan said anyone interested in deploying to help with Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma is welcomed.

“These are two-week deployments that we are sending people out for when that time comes,” Callahan said. “We’ve sent out just about 70 people right now from [the Ohio Buckeye Region]. From this immediate area we have, I think seven or eight people from just the surrounding area here.”

Red Cross will hold a Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma training session Saturday September 9, 2017 from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. with food provided. The volunteers will learn how to assist in sheltering, feeding, and psychological first aid care.

“Our first response is to help the client, what they need to do. Whether its sheltering, food, the basic needs, and then we also do follow-up at some point,” Callahan said. “You know we’ll do case work and try to provide that with linking to other resources and things like that also.”

Volunteers need to be physically fit, have a driver’s license present, and registered online. To register for either hurricane click the link provided.
