Waffle Wagon Has New Look

The Zanesville High School Band’s Waffle Wagon may look a little different at the Muskingum County Blue Ribbon Fair this year.

It’s new, and Band Booster Vice President, Mark Coulson, says it’s a lot more spacious.

“We have a lot more work space than the old one. Plus, we had to upgrade everything to Health Department requirements. So, we have all the required sinks and that sort of thing, ” says Coulson.

However, Coulson says the same delicious recipe will be used to make the Waffle Wagon’s popular treat.

“They are the best waffles around. The secret’s in the batter, and I can’t give you the recipe because they won’t let me have it, ” says Coulson.

The Waffle Wagon’s first appearance at the Fair came back in 1971. 84-year-old Dale Mautz and his wife set up their station, which he says was a little more primitive than it is today, and he says making the waffles was a family affair.

“They all got up and helped Mom make the batter in the morning and carry it out here. They’d come out and drain the tank out because they have to drain the tank every day and keep all the crumbs out. They really enjoyed it, ” says Mautz.

Back in 1971, the Waffle Wagon’s famous waffled used to cost a dollar for seven waffles. Now, they cost one dollar for just one waffle.
