“Walk A Mile In My Shoes” raises awareness for domestic violence

ZANESVILLE, OHIO- This years “Walk A Mile In My Shoes” event took place right outside the Muskingum County Courthouse on Monday evening.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and according to the national coalition against domestic violence, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some sort of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
The Domestic Violence Coalition of Muskingum County sponsored the event and donated all of the money raised from the event to Transitions, Inc.
Dorothy Thomas, Legal and Criminal Justice Advocate, said that they received so much support from the community and all of the “local celebrities” that participated to help spread awareness.
“We’re doing this event to bring education to the people and the community. Â Bring awareness about domestic violence, add a little fun to it, but mainly show that it is hard to walk in somebody else’s shoes,” said Thomas.
Thomas said that if this event brought awareness to just one person to get out of a domestic violence situation then they have done their job.
“I have seen lots of people come and go, go back again multiple times, but I’ve also seen them succeed and get away from abuse, so it makes my job worthwhile.”
Transitions Inc., ended up raising $2,315.00 from Monday nights event.
