West Nile Virus Confirmed in Muskingum County Mosquito Traps

ZANESVILLE, OH – Mosquito season has taken a turn with West Nile Virus confirmed in Muskingum County.

The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the virus in mosquitoes collected from traps on Manns Fork Road in Duncan Falls and Cass Street in Dresden. As of now, no human cases have been reported in Muskingum County. Most people infected with West Nile Virus do not develop any symptoms, while 20% may experience mild symptoms, and less than 1% develop severe illness.

“West Nile Virus has been detected in our area. That’s a virus that is spread by mosquitoes and it affects our nervous system. Symptoms can include head aches, body aches, joint aches, chills, and fever.” Environmental Health Specialist, Matt Hemmer said.

Health officials recommend avoiding outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, wearing long sleeves and pants when possible, using repellents containing DEET, and removing standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.

“If you notice any symptoms or you suspect you may have the virus, we recommend you consult with your health care professional for treatment.” Hemmer said.

The Health Department will be specifically spraying the areas where the positive mosquito pools were found. For more information or to view areas already treated, visit the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department’s website.
