Westview Auction, Full of Memories

The doors will close for a final time at Westview Elementary School, as former teachers, students and community members collect their memories.

On Saturday, the former elementary school hosted a 3rd surplus auction for Zanesville City Schools. The building was closed at the end of the 2009 school year and has since been used as a storage facility. More than 300 people were expected to take part in the auction.

"People just like auctions for one, and they hope to get something from the school. Some of the people that taught here just hope to get something they have as a memory," said Building Facility Management, Matt Hittle. "And a lot of the other schools in the area are coming to buy some things they need for their school. "

Items being auctioned off included tables, chairs, storage cabinets, and playground and kitchen equipment. Former Student, David Tarbert, is now PTO President of John Mcintire Elementary School, he said, he came out to purchase supplies they might need, when he saw his former 2nd grade teacher, Cecelia Guss.

"Memories, I was walking the halls and the different classroom I used to teach in and I see some of my stuff I used in my classroom and I thought, ‘Oh it would be nice to have something to remember my 35 years here," said Guss.

The previous auctions have raised about $2,500  which will be put towards the Zanesville City Schools’ general fund. Hittle said, if all items are not sold a fourth auction will be considered.
