ZANESVILLE, Ohio – During the cold war of the latter half of the 20th century, America’s military had to be ready at a moment’s notice.

One of those soldiers was U.S. Navy Sailor Charles W. Evans Sr. who is being recognized for his contributions from 1956 to 1958 with a locally made American flag being presented to his daughter Kim Ball.

“While he was in the navy, he… they took and put fuel on other ships. They would take cargo and supplies to other ships. He wasn’t really in any kind of battle but he said it could be pretty rough out there weatherwise,” Ball said.

The flag that Ball received was made by Annin Flagmakers in Coshocton and presented by Veteran and Local Restaurant Owner Nate Johnson.

“So this is our third year being part of the Military Salute. Being a veteran myself, I take great pride in getting to give back to our local veterans and our local veteran community. The more years you get removed from the uniform, the more you really appreciate more and more of what each one of us did. No matter what time you served, when you served, where or how; you know veterans answered the call at the time it was needed,” Johnson said.

WHIZ’s Annual Military Salute allows participating businesses to purchase a locally made flag and present it to a local veteran or family member for the efforts they made in the service of our country.
