Winter Driving Safety Tips

ZANESVILLE, OH – With the winter weather raging on, the Ohio State Highway Patrol wants to make sure you make it to your destination safely.

Trooper Nicholas R. Smith, with the Zanesville Post, said if you need to head out and the snow is starting to stick, take your time and give a good amount of distance between you and the car in front of you.

He also says to give yourself a little more time than you normally would for your commute to the store work and keep control of your vehicle if it starts to get slippery on the roadways.

“Don’t get into a hurry to get anywhere,” Trooper Smith said. “Keep a good distance between you and the vehicles in front of you. Always prepare for the upcoming curves in the road, start to slow down before you get to that corner, not when you get to that corner and you hit your brakes real quick, because that can cause you to slide off the road.”

Smith recommends putting an extra jacket, blankets, or clothes in your car in case you become stranded.

He also said to check the air pressure in your tires and how much windshield wiper fluid you have before hitting the road.

“With the amount of salt on the road, vehicles in front of you are going to kick that up, it’s going to get on your windshield and it’s going to affect your visibility,” Smith said. “The general maintenance to your vehicle to make sure it is prepared for winter. Get good tires put on your car before the snow starts falling.”
