Winter’s not over yet and Zanesville is prepared

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Winter is winding down but it’s not quite over, so the city of Zanesville is still prepared to keep the roads clear. The January snowstorm brought a lot of snow that took a lot of time and resources to clear, but Mayor Don Mason says the city still has a good supply of salt for when it’s needed.

“We’re on a contract where we buy a certain amount of tonnage every year and we get a great price. So, I’m really pleased with the way the street department handled that. We do try to put down enough salt to pretreat again, prior to snow,” Mason said. “That helps keep the roads clear and then we try to treat as we clear the snow. So I’ve been really happy with the way the street department crews have worked. They’ve done an outstanding job.”

The first day of spring isn’t until March 20, and the groundhog did see his shadow so until winter is over, the city will be prepared to work on the roads. Mason says we are certainly through the worse of what this winter has to offer but you never know what to expect.

“All I can say is we’re not expecting another major event this year. I joke about that because I remember in 1987, when I was mayor, we had a blizzard on April 2. It was like a little April Fools joke. But as far as this year, we don’t expect another major event but again I encourage the public to work with us on trying to clear the streets and clear the sidewalks so that we can be good neighbors,” Mason said.

As winter comes to an end, the potholes it created remain, and Mason encourages everyone to report any they find on the city of Zanesville’s website to help get them fixed quickly.
