ZANESVILLE, OH – Zanesville City School Officials as well as many State and Area agencies cut the ribbon on the latest school based health center.

Back in August, they opened the health center at the High School and so far this school year they have seen a total of 700 students as well as faculty.

Superintendent of Zanesville City Schools, Laura Tompkins, said today served as the official opening for the High School Health Center as well as a second Health Center at Zane Grey Intermediate that will open on April 1st.

“So they gave us a little over $1.3 Million and with all that we had done with the construction of the STEAM center and some weight rooms, we decided that wasn’t going to be enough money.” Tompkins said. “We came up with a plan to add two health based clinics instead of one! And we got to send some money back to the state.”

Tompkins said students and staff receive not only medical treatment but also mental health counseling as well.

The Director of the Ohio Department of Development, Lydia Mihalik, was also in attendance and added that these School Based Health Centers help keep students in the classroom and their minds off distractions, like worrying if they need to miss a day of school.

“It helps on a variety of levels; improving GPA, getting kids career ready, making sure that their absenteeism is less, and so it’s just a great day, we’re very happy to be here.” Mihalik said.

The Clinics will operate Monday through Fridays from 7:30AM until 3:30PM and students simply need to check in with the nurse to get an appointment.
