Zanesville City Schools Proposes Building Project

ZANESVILLE, OH – Laura Tompkins, the Executive Director of Academic Leadership for Zanesville City Schools, met with the Muskingum County Commissioners to present a proposal for a new building project.

The proposed building would be constructed on existing school property and would aim to address various educational and administrative needs within the district. It is estimated to span approximately 32,500 square feet, providing space for intended functions.

“We are hoping to build a building on existing property that would house 8 to 10 preschools, clinics for Muskingum Behavioral Health, Muskingum Valley Health Centers, and All Well, as well as community space for adult learning and our administrative offices.” Tompkins said.

Zanesville schools plan to begin the design phase in the fall of 2024 and complete the project by 2026. The estimated cost of the multi-purpose building is between 15 to16 million dollars.
A standout feature of the proposal is its potential to increase access to preschool education.

“I think preschool is needed and we’re running out of space in our building for preschool. This would allow us to have more preschool students. I think that our Kindergarten Readiness scores aren’t as great as we’d like them to be, and I think a lot of our kids aren’t in preschool. If we had more opportunities to have space for them, then we could have twice as many students in preschool.” Tompkins said.

Tompkins has plans to further discuss the project with the Zanesville City Mayor, Don Mason.
