Zanesville Fire Department Urges Drivers to be Cautious in High Water

High water on roadways can put drivers in dangerous situations.

Zanesville Fire Fighter Greg Brocklehurst said it’s up to drivers to make the right call when approaching standing water.

“You really don’t want to drive through it because it can be deceiving how high it may be,” said Brocklehurst. “It may not look like much but you start going into it and it starts getting deeper and deeper. It’s very hard to judge how deep it is before you get into it. ”

The Zanesville Fire Department is prepared to respond to those who find themselves stranded due to high water situations.

“We will respond with our trucks and our boats,” said Brocklehurst. “If there’s a way we can’t get to them on foot we throw something is they have to be out of the vehicle, we’ll throw something to them and then we’ll get the boats right in the water. We want to throw something they can grab hold of and float with and then we’ll get to them with the boats. ”

When in doubt, drivers are always encouraged to turn around and never attempt to drive through a road covered with water.
