ZANESVILLE, Ohio- The Zanesville High School football team lent a helping hand to the community on Wednesday.

The football players helped with the heavy lifting in the transportation of roughly 1,500 shoes from East Side Community Ministries to the Zanesville Civic League Community Center for the 29th Annual ‘Lace Up for Kids’ event.

“For us, it’s important to go back and give to the community because the community comes out and supports our football team and watches our games, so we just think it’s important to go out and help the community,” said Logan Miller, ZHS football team captain.

The program benefits low-income students in the area by providing them with brand new athletic shoes to start their school year off on the right foot.

“Being able to go to school and fit in with the rest of the kids is really important today. A lot of times kids will come in, in the shoes we gave them last year and so we know they’ve held up, and we know they’re ready to get a new pair and we know we’re sending them back on a good foot to school,” said Sue Thuma, ‘Lace Up for Kids’ co-chair.

There were approximately 1,200 children pre-registered to receive their new shoes at the event on Thursday.

The program is sponsored by Wendy’s, WHIZ Media Group and a number of community sponsors.
