ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The Zanesville Police Department orchestrated a surprise for a local Army recruiter as thanks for their outreach and community service.

Staff Sergeant Milford Henry has been in Zanesville for the past three years. During that time he has helped with organizations like ForeverDads, Project Blueprint, and has coached several local youth athletic teams. Now that Henry is transferring to Houston, the local police department surprised him with a Certificate of Commendation surrounded by members of the community.

“Just coming here today, being recognized by the police department, just being recognized for just being a decent human being. Like, I know they say I’m very humble, which I am, like, literally I just do this cause I enjoy it,” Henry said. “I enjoy giving back to the kids, I enjoy giving back to the community, and literally I just appreciate how they welcome me here in the Zanesville community. So yeah, this was definitely something surprising but I feel very loved in this moment. ”

For Henry, the thing he will miss most about Zanesville is the sense of community he feels working with children and their families.

“… when you’re in a community, you see the love and you see how passionate these parents are. Like yeah, sometimes it’s crazy, it gets wild but at the same time just to see how passionate they are about their kids,” Henry said. “… kids just believing in their selves and learning the game of whatever it is. Whatever sport that they put their mind to, there’s just no better feeling. No better feeling, just to walk around and people know you and be like ‘hey.’ And one thing I always say is, no matter what, no matter what anybody says, if the kids love you, then you know you’re doing something right.”

Henry mentioned at the end of the surprise ceremony that even if though he is moving to Houston, he will only be a phone call away.
