Zanesville’s Social Justice History Seminar

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Organizations for social justice and racial equity were strongly represented here in Zanesville, decades prior to the civil rights movement that took place nationwide during the 1960s.
Muskingum County Social Justice Coalition will be holding a seminar that details those local struggles, which took place during that time. Muskingum County Social Justice Coalition Volunteer and Keynote Speaker David Hamilton shares what he will be presenting.
“The Social Justice Coalition has sponsored a series that it calls ‘The Community Education Series.’ It talks about various aspects of race and race relations and even broader human relations issues,” Hamilton said.
The presentation will cover the organization of Zanesville’s black residents who were concerned about inequality and mistreatment. Hamilton will discuss how the local organizations networked nationally and provide local examples of segregation.
“Now this one is to be a… the presentation of a report on my research on the history of civil rights activism. Particularly the early history, which dates back to 1920,” Hamilton said.
The Zoom/hybrid presentation will take place 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 12th, at 526 Putnam Avenue in Zanesville, next to the Muskingum County Community Foundation.
