ZPD Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is starting to creep up, and besides worrying about the best costume to wear, it’s also important to try to be as safe as possible.

The Zanesville Police Department is gearing up to ensure that everyone is not only having a great time but, the kids are safe while trick-or-treating. We spoke with Captain Tony Coury, and he emphasized how important it is to take proper caution on Halloween night.

“We want to be active out there so that they can see the police cars. Some of us will be handing out candy, some of the officers to hand out candy from the patrol units. Basically, we’re just telling people to slow down. It’s trick-or-treat. There’s a lot of kids out running, they’re excited, they’re running from house to house, so you just need to be aware,” Coury said.

When we asked Coury what are some things that ZPD is doing to show their presence, he told us that they want to stay active and mentioned different ways people can stay visible so that drivers can see you.

“They should have something, carry a flashlight or some type of device that can keep them well lit. The parents need to stay close by and walk with them and instruct them,” Coury said.

Coury also said to always have a parent or guardian to check the candy before eating. If you see any thing suspicious, call 911 and report it.
