ZANESVILE, Ohio– S.T.A.R.S camp kicked off this week.
During this three day camp middle school aged young ladies learn about sensitivity, tolerance, attitude, responsibility, and self esteem.
“You get to see them slowly just kind of come out of their shell,” S.T.A.R.S Coordinator Ronelle Barnett said. “They are just in a different comfort zone in a way. I give a lot of props for coming because they know [anyone]. There’s [no one] Â from their school here but they’re coming and they’re here and that’s why I love it because they start to meet new people.”
S.T.A.R.S camp is held at Zane State and Ohio University Zanesville Campus, not only do these young ladies have access to workshops and activities, they are also expose to the college atmosphere.
“Come because you learn new things,” Taryn West said. “You get to have a lot of fun, meet new friends, and you learn a lot. You do. It’s just really inspiring.”
“I loved stars camp when I was a camper,” Morgan Combs said. “It was fantastic. I made a lot of new friends and the workshops were so much fun. We have large group presentations at the end of the day. One year we had a gynecologist come in and she talked about just girls’ bodies and she told us a bunch of stuff. We had a self defense program. It was a lot of fun.”
51 young ladies participated in this year’s S.T.A.R.S camp.
