2019 S.T.A.R.S. Summer Camp

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – The school year is coming to a close and that means taking advantage of summer camp options.
Any young woman in middle school still has the chance to sign up for the S.T.A.R.S. summer camp. It is a three day camp for girls in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. S.T.A.R.S. stands for sensitivity, tolerance, attitude, responsiblity, and self-esteem. A program that elevates self-esteem and awareness within adolescent girls. The camp will involve activities such as self-esteem building, team building exercises, and even creative crafts.
“And that’s really what we try to instill over those three days is that self-image you know, just make girls feel better about themselves,” said S.T.A.R.S. Camp Coordinator, Ronelle Barnett.
“It’s a comfortable place for them to come and just learn about who they want to be. We talk about like setting goals and just that empowerment within themself,” she added.
The girls will be going through 13 different workshops over the three days. They will also be split into different groups that they travel with where they are encouraged to establish quality relationships and friendships. S.T.A.R.S started 16 years ago and has always focused on middle school girls.
“You think, middle school’s tough and we just want to give them a little more self-confidence. Just to challenge them, come try new things that they’ve never done before or step out of that comfort zone a little bit. But this is just that fun way for them to do it,” Barnett said.
S.T.A.R.S. camp takes place on June 11th, 12th, and 13th at the Zanesville campus of OUZ and Zane State College. It costs 20 dollars to participate and applications are still being accepted at the Muskingum Behavioral Health.
