2019 Youth Fishing Derby

Fishing Derby

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – An annual event involving fishing for kids.

The Youth Fishing Derby took place Saturday morning at the Zanesville Canal Park just off the Y-Bridge. The event is for children ages 15 and younger, but must be accompanied by an adult. And all participants had to bring their own bait, rods, and reels. Trophies were in order for the kids, and refreshments were available as well.

“We’re having a youth fishing tournament to promote outdoor activities in the youth and the Zanesville area,” said Naturalist John Hickenbottom.

Hickenbottom said the significance of teaching the youth outdoor activities at a young age involves conservation. He said the Southeast Ohio area is great space to take advantage of outdoor activities.

“It’s really important for conservation efforts cause if you harbor that sort of stuff when they’re young then they appreciate it when they get older. So it’s all more important to target the youth when it comes to any sort of conservation effort,” he added.

The event started at 10 a.m. and was free for participants.
