A Local Agency Receives Funds to Recycle Tires
ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Muskingum County Emergency Management Agency received money last week to recycle nearly 600 tires.
The agency received an EPA grant to dispose of tires that have been thrown out along the county roadways. Emergency Management Director, Bo Keck said tires that are improperly disposed of pose a fire hazard and create mosquito breeding grounds.
“Tires are hard to get rid of right now, if you go in and buy new tires they’re going to charge you $3 to $5 to disposed of them,” said Keck. “They are hard to get rid of and with the Zika Virus and mosquito’s because the water lays in tires and of course breeds. The city and county are trying to get rid of them so there not laying around and people are taking them off their property and just throwing them.”
Keck said they received an on-going grant of nearly $2,000 to dispose abandoned tires that have been brought to the company from public and private lands.
“From this point on, once we get about 100 we notify the EPA and they’ll come out and get rid of them so that they’re not sitting around,” said Keck.
Keck said the Solid Waste Management District is scheduled to have a tire disposal day towards the end of October for area residents.
