Local Participation in Autism Awareness Month

Monday marks the beginning of National Autism Awareness Month and a local organization is celebrating…

The Center for Child and Family development released balloons to mark the occasion. Case Manager Elke King said the number of people diagnosed with autism continues to grow rapidly, and awareness is the best support.

"Affecting children, as adults as well. So what we really want to do is spread the awareness, tell people about it, and support. We do have a couple autistic children here and we really just want to show them we support them and are willing to help them in their treatments," said King.

Kids attached personal messages to the balloons before sending them off. King said people affected by autism are no different than anyone else.

"The messages were ‘Autism Awareness Month’ and it has ‘Center for Child and Family Development’ on it… Our children here like balloons and we thought we’d release them and show ‘Woo! It’s a celebration!’."
